Dedicated
to the improvement of sport fishing
opportunities in the Delta County Area
|
The
Great Lakes Sport Fishermen, a grass roots organization, set out to assure
that the youth of our area will have the ability to enjoy a wholesome
leisure time recreational activity as they grow up, in addition to learning
good sportsmanship.
GLSF
also provides scholarship each year to a student at Bay de Noc Community
College who is competing studies in an area which will enhance our environment.
In
a effort to provide people of all ages with an opportunity to enjoy
the out of doors, and fishing in particular, this organization has worked
endlessly to restock walleye into the bays and inland lakes, plant trout
in local streams, created partnerships with other agencies and organizations,
such as the Michigan DNR, Wild Life Unlimited of Delta County, Mead
Corportation, Michigan Habitat Foundation and Wildlife Forever to name
a few, to provide barrier free access to fishing areas, improve landing
sites, and habitat for fish reproduction and plant more fish into the
area lakes and streams.
By
holding local catch and release tournaments, as well as hosting the
MWC tournaments, the sport fishermen and women have raised money to
build and maintain two rearing ponds, raised hundreds of thousands of
walleye fry to the fingerling stage, and release them back into the
bays.
In
cooperation with many other clubs, such as Kids First, Delta Cancer
Alliance, and Big Brother/Big Sisters, they continue to promote fishing
as a family activity in the community. Three times during the year the
GLSF is involved in "Kids Free Fishing" derbies which are totally free
of charge. In addition, food, prizes, trophies, as well as educational
seminars are included.
Come
join us in providing a good family orientated sport for kids of all
ages and abilities in the beautiful Bays de Noc!
